We’re all being asked to do more with less, and this has never been more apparent than since the beginning of the pandemic. With the current state of affairs, college and university students are struggling – physically, emotionally, mentally, financially, and more.
Correspondingly, higher education personnel have found themselves in the position of trying to connect their students with the resources they need to ensure their basic needs are taken care of. Cutbacks in funding on many campuses have led to personnel seeking creative solutions for helping students meet these needs. Some schools have developed comprehensive programs to support wraparound services; while on other campuses, personnel spend their own money to ensure students don’t go hungry.
Data and reports support the premise that, if a student’s basic needs are met, they are more likely to stay in school and complete their certificates or degrees.
SOCHE would like to bring higher ed personnel together for a series of virtual idea-sharing discussions about how to provide better support to students and help them stay in school. Here is the schedule for these discussions and what topics or areas of concern will be discussed on each date:
- Friday, Feb. 3, from 1-2 p.m. ET – Mental Health
- Friday, Feb. 10, from 1-2 p.m. ET – Food Insecurity
- Friday, March 3, from 1-2 p.m. ET – Community Resources & Partnerships
- Friday, March 31, from 1-2 p.m. ET – External Funding
We hope that you will join us to discuss how you provide student support in each area, who you ask for help, what is working on your campus, what hasn’t worked on your campus, how to make support programs permanent, and so on. We want this to be a time when participants can share ideas, glean information from those who are operating in similar situations, and explore ways to collaborate for the betterment of the student experience.
