Event Details

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Strategies for Enhancing Student Engagement in the Classroom,” on Tuesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. Rita Kumar and Dr. Brenda Refaei from the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash.

In this interactive session, we will explore the role of student engagement in academic success. Designing engaging courses begins with knowing who your learners are and what they already know about your course content.

The presenters will share how the four levels of active learning — Interactive, Constructive, Active, Passive (Lovett et al., 2023) — can be used to design activities to promote student engagement in their courses. Participants will learn how to use each level of active learning to support and elevate student engagement.

Attendees will participate in active learning approaches to explore how they can be adopted in their own courses. Resources will be shared for attendees to deepen their understanding and use of active learning strategies to promote student engagement.

By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to

  • Describe how active learning supports student engagement
  • Design active learning activities for their courses to support student engagement

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
