You’re invited to join SOCHE for another virtual lunch and learn, entitled “Designing and Teaching Using ‘Chunked’ Learning,” on Wednesday, Jan. 19, beginning at 12 p.m. The session will be presented by Dr. Alice “Betsy” Grimes, Director of Faculty Development, and Tammy Bugher, M.Ed., Director of Instructional Systems, from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).
Research has shown that traditional learning environments (where teacher assists learners with memorization/recitation techniques) and methodologies are not well-suited to all learners for developing their critical thinking, problem-solving, or decision-making skills. Additionally, retention and application of content can be improved through modifications in how instruction is planned, designed, and delivered.
This presentation ties current learning theory and cognitive science in support of chunked learning with implementation. Chunked learning design strategies facilitate a competency-based, tailored instruction designed for the level of knowledge and learning style of the learner. It enables the delivery of content that is effective, efficient, and relevant, which is consistent with the expectations of a continuum of learning.
Invaluable for educators at all levels, this presentation will describe the concept of designing and teaching via the chunk method and the research and theoretical underpinnings that support this instructional strategy. About the Presenters
Tammy Bugher, M.Ed.
Director of Instructional Systems
Air Force Institute of Technology
Ms. Tammy Lynn Bugher, M.Ed. received a Bachelor’s in Business Management and a Master’s in Education. She has over 25 years of experience in the field and has taught as an adjunct in industry and is currently part of the faculty at the Air Force Institute of Technology, School of Systems and Logistics. Prior to her work at AFIT, she served in the United States Air Force, held leadership positions in industry, and worked as a strategic learning and change consultant. Ms. Bugher is currently the Director of Instructional Systems at AFIT LS and the Course Director for the Academic Instructor Course, a position she has held since 2015.
Alice “Betsy” Grimes, Ph.D.
Director of Faculty Development, Air Force Institute of Technology
Dr. Alice Grimes is the Director of Faculty Development and Equity Advisor for the Graduate School of Engineering and Management at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Grimes has many years of experience as a professor and college dean and is a Professor Emeritus of Urbana University. She also worked in human services administration prior to entering academia. Dr. Grimes holds a Ph.D. and an MSW, both from the Ohio State University. She also earned an MBA from Urbana University and an MA from Central Michigan University. Dr. Grimes is a Licensed Social Worker in Ohio and a Certified Family Life Educator through the National Council on Family Relations.
