Event Details

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) Articulation Council is pleased to present “Upholding the Promise: Acknowledging Transfer Barriers and Leveraging Success,” a virtual conference that will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET via Zoom.

Join us as we explore what a Transfer Promise means and how that might appear to different institutions and student groups. You’ll have to opportunity to learn how professionals working in the articulation and transfer spaces are impacting all students, including those involved in dual enrollment or College Credit Plus (CCP).

Hear from a panel of students about their varied transfer experiences, including the obstacles they experienced during their transfer processes and what worked well for them. Concurrent sessions will be offered, covering topics such as advising CCP students; best practices for preparing students to go to out-of-state institutions and receiving transfers from another state; and how to leverage technology to support articulation and transfer initiatives.

Finally, our keynote speaker will be Dr. Amelia Salazar, Vice President of Student Success at Wright State University. She’ll share with us the practices and paradigms that undergird supporting transfer students, as well as the role that transfer plays in student success.

We hope you’ll plan to join us for this time together, exploring the significance of transfer and articulation in today’s higher education landscape.

• Session 1 – Best Practices in Advising College Credit Plus (CCP) Students
As participation in College Credit Plus continues to grow, so does the number of credits that Ohio high school students are earning. But how can secondary and post-secondary partners ensure that those credits are more than just “random acts of dual enrollment”? What are some of the best practices for advising CCP students for future careers and transfer, especially knowing that CCP coursework can impact future financial aid? Learn how Lorain County Community College’s recently revised advising policy will help CCP students declare subplans, better preparing them for pathways in in-demand careers or transfer to specific institutions.
Presenter: Nadia Leary, Ohio Alliance of Dual Enrollment Partnerships/Lorain County Community College
Facilitator: Maureen Cooper, Franklin University

• Session 2 – Just Across the River: Out-of-State Partner Spotlight
While we all have great partners in-state fulfilling the Ohio Transfer Promise, this session will explore how transfer promises are fulfilled beyond our borders. Join Cincinnati State Technical & Community College and Northern Kentucky University as they highlight the variety of practical programs they offer to engage transfer-intending students. Walk away with a variety of ideas for your own institution and out-of-state partners.
Presenters: Dr. Myshamil Walker, Cincinnati State Technical & Community College, and TBD, Northern Kentucky University

Transfer processes can feel overwhelming! This session is a facilitated discussion focused on streamlining and enhancing the management of transfer processes. This session will delve into innovative technologies and ideas that simplify and optimize transfer operations, making them more efficient and effective. Participants will engage in a collaborative dialogue, exploring practical solutions and strategies for improving transfer initiatives. Whether you’re looking to reduce manual workload or integrate new technology, this session offers valuable insights and actionable takeaways to enhance your institution’s transfer management.

12:00 p.m. ET KEYNOTE: Meaningful Practices and Paradigms for Transfer Student Success
Amelia Salazar, Ed.D., Vice President, Student Success, Wright State University
In the ever-changing landscape of higher education, predicting the next shift is almost impossible. However, a few things are certain: enrollment is changing, institutions are challenged to adjust, and thus it is more important than ever that we deliver on our promise of student success. Transfer students are critical to that promise, and both sending and receiving institutions have integral roles to play. This keynote address will focus on the practices and paradigms that undergird supporting transfer students, as well as unpacking some of the emergent ideas in the field. Come learn alongside colleagues and contribute to our collaborative dialogue around transfer student success and what part we can all play.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
