You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Leadership: Theory and Practice,” on Wednesday, May 14, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. Amanda McLellan, director of the Thomas Library at Wittenberg University.
As John F. Kennedy once wrote, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” There are numerous resources aimed at improving leadership, and it can become quickly overwhelming. This presentation will provide a brief overview of some of the theoretical approaches to leadership and what those look like in practice. We will discuss some of the pros and cons of several major theories and tips on how to choose a leadership style (or styles) to best apply to your situation, as well as identify resources where you can learn more.
Session attendees will:
- Learn about a few different leadership theories, including trait approach, servant leadership, and adaptive leadership.
- Discuss some of the pros and cons to these theories, and what they would look like in practice.
- Obtain tips and next steps for choosing a leadership style.

About the Presenter
Amanda McLellan, Ed.D.
Director, Thomas Library
Wittenberg University
Dr. Amanda Hartman McLellan is the Director of Thomas Library at Wittenberg University. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University, an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a BA from DePauw University. She also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Illinois School of Information Sciences. Her research interests include library technology, usability and user experience, and library leadership.
