Event Details

The Strategic Ohio Council for Higher Education (SOCHE) invites you to an IN-PERSON training, “Interpersonal Violence at the Intersections: Violence Prevention for Q+ Communities,” scheduled for Friday, March 28, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. ET at Montgomery County Business Solutions Center (1435 Cincinnati Street, Suite #300, Dayton). Presented by Mady DeVivo and Sawyer Federinko from the University of Dayton, this session is designed specifically to support personnel working at educational institutions.

According to UCLA’s Williams Institute, “nearly one-in-five (19.1%) LGBTQ people experienced in-person bullying or harassment, 12.5% of LGBTQ people experienced online or other indirect bullying or harassment, 17.6% experienced sexual harassment, and 11.8% experienced sexual assault in college.” Additionally, LGBTQ+ women, transgender individuals, and non-binary people are just as likely, if not more likely, than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts to have experienced intimate partner violence during their lifetimes.

This interactive presentation will empower higher education faculty and staff to prevent, recognize, and respond to acts of sexual and domestic violence within the LGBTQ+ community. Participants will review relevant legislation, policy and procedures, and practice active allyship. Additionally, presenters will create a space for dialogue to address current opportunities and challenges in creating safe spaces for Q+ students in higher education.

Learning goals:

  1. Identify and apply actions of allyship in the context of the LGBTQ+ community.
  2. Recognize signs and symptoms of Interpersonal Violence and practice appropriate prevention and response techniques.
  3. Understand how campus policies, including Title IX and Campus SaVe, apply to and impact violence prevention and Q+ students.

Join us to learn how to prevent and address interpersonal violence within LGBTQ+ communities in higher education, and become an active ally for creating safer, more inclusive spaces for Q+ students. Click here to register now.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
