Event Details

You are invited to join SOCHE for a virtual lunch and learn entitled “Why Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility Matter for Belonging,” on Thursday, March 13, beginning at 12 p.m. ET. The session will be presented by Dr. María I. Ortiz, executive director of the Faculty Enrichment Center at the University of Cincinnati.

Join us for an insightful learning session where we’ll dive into the essentials of culture, identity, cultural competence, cultural humility, and intersectionality. These concepts are key to building psychological safety and integrating effective diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies. We’ll also chat about real-life case studies, exploring how these ideas can enhance empathy, connection, and understanding in classrooms, workplaces, and everyday interactions.

By learning how to apply these concepts to real-world scenarios, you can improve empathy, connection, and understanding among different cultural groups in both professional and educational settings. Discover practical tools and strategies to create psychologically safe spaces, which is essential for integrating effective DEI initiatives. This is a must for leaders, educators, and anyone committed to inclusivity.

Learning objectives for this session:

  • Understand key concepts: By the end of the session, participants will be able to define and differentiate between culture, identity, cultural competence, cultural humility, and intersectionality.
  • Apply concepts to case studies: Participants will be able to analyze case studies and demonstrate how these concepts are essential for fostering empathy, connection, and understanding among diverse cultural groups in various settings.
  • Enhance psychological safety: Participants will learn to apply cultural competence and cultural humility to create psychologically safe environments that support effective diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.

This learning opportunity will not only enhance your professional skills but also contribute to your personal growth, making you more empathetic and culturally aware. Plus, you’ll have the chance to connect with others who are passionate about advancing DEI, share ideas, and learn best practices from fellow participants. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your cultural awareness and DEI strategies, while connecting with like-minded individuals.

Councils & Committees

SOCHE is dedicated to advancing higher education through active collaboration, resource and knowledge building, and effective professional development programs. To accomplish this, SOCHE administers 16 active Councils and Committees. The purpose of a SOCHE Council or Committee is to provide an opportunity for representatives from higher education to be a resource for one another, share information and best practices, identify common challenges, and, ultimately, broaden awareness of the resources, services, and activities in higher education. SOCHE is also dependent upon the Councils and Committees for substantial input on annual professional development programs.
